WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
Mindfulness is paying attention
in a sustained way,
in the present moment,
to what is.
Through mindfulness we can develop self-regulation of attention so that it is maintained on immediate experience.
All too often we are on autopilot, going through the motions of whatever we are doing, such as eating, driving, even talking, often lost in thought. So we miss much of our life as it unfolds moment by moment
Mindfulness offers possibilities and power to live life more fully, consciously and able to choose our responses.
Mindfulness practice is simple, non-sectarian, and requires only your curiosity and willingness to explore its scientifically validated benefits.
Well before the cover of Time Magazine, June 2014 featured “Mindful Revolution” on its cover, Mindfulness has been the subject of intensive research. It is offered in hospitals, businesses, athletics and schools. . . . nearly every sector of our society.

A picture is worth a thousand words! Red range indicates greater activation, even agitation while blue/green indicates a sense of peacefulness, physical relaxation and calm. And an MRI study from Harvard this year (Sarah Lazar of Massachusetts General Hospital,) proves mindfulness meditation literally rebuilds the brain’s. Gray matter in weeks. Changes in the brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements; people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing.
“The participants spent an average of 27 minutes per day practicing mindfulness exercises and this is all it took to stimulate a major increase in gray matter density in the hippocampus, the part of the brain associated with self-awareness, compassion and introspection. Participant-reported reductions in stress also were correlated with decreased gray -matter density in the amygdala, which is known to play an important role in anxiety and stress. None of these changes were seen in the control group, indicating that they had not resulted merely from the passage of time. It is fascinating to see the brain’s plasticity and that, by practicing meditation, we can play an active role in changing the brain and can increase our well-being and quality of life.”
